"The animal with 20,000 teeth"
via jonjohnjonjohn"Today I want to tell you about an animal. An animal that has up to 20,000 teeth. These teeth are the strongest natural material on earth.
This is an animal with an appetite so insatiable that they eat 20% of their bodyweight in food each day."

"I am of course talking the mighty snail. Here's Snoopy to get us started. He's crushing that huge plant like it was just a little twig. Oh wait. Well he's doing his best anyway."

"A lot of people will say snails are slow. It's not always true. An average snail can travel at up to 6.7 meters a second. Pretty quick ! Granted that is their terminal velocity but that is just a technicality. Simone and Sofia here are demonstrating."

"Shane here is a Potamopyrgus oppidanus. He's really small. His shell only grows to 3mm."

"However snails come in many shapes and sizes from XXS to XL. The most common is a medium like Sprocket here who is giving Shaggy a lift."

"Sugar here is a giant African land snail. He's gone red from eating too many cranberries. Snails change colour depending on their environment and diet."

"Snails are also quite strong. They can lift up to 10 times their own bodyweight as Sonic, Skye, Sven and Scotty demonstrate here."

"Recently snails have been discovered that are transparent. Schnitzel here is giving his ant friend a kiss."

"I know this looks very real but it is actually a computer edited photo. An actual snail takes 33 hours to travel a mile. The fastest snail is actually a sea snail called the Plough snail."

"Talking of speed, some snails trail each other to go faster. A bit like a car in a race. It's not working very well for Scotch though as Sid who is in front is a bit on the small side."

"Snails can lay over 100 eggs in one go. Spyro in the corner here is very proud. There is a small chance the photo is not actually of a snail egg however."

"Snoopy, Sage and Scruffy are helping this lady. No really, it's true. The cosmetics industry uses snail serum. The mucin can ease wounds and other blemishes."

"Some snails are not so kind however. Here's Simon. He is a Cone snail and he can kill you. Simon has a venomous harpoon which can cut through wetsuits and even gloves. I would recommend avoiding Simon."

"All that hard work can get tiring though. Snails can sleep for up to three years at a time. They will do so if there is not enough water. Quiet now, Smoky is on his way to bed."

"Snails have been around a long time. The oldest fully preserved snail dates back 99 million years! Sophie here is posing for the photo by the way. She isn't really working the clock."

"Just like a tree a snails shell has rings which indicate its age. It took a while to get his photo of Spunky, Sanco and Sydney as they just wouldn't stay still!"

"Some snails are prettier than others. Here's Sparkle, a charming Giant horse Conch. He loves to eat clams."
-

"However some snails are not only larger but also more beautiful. Sweetie is a giant whelk. Isn't she gorgeous ?
She is an XL which the largest snail size. Her shell can grow to 70cm.
She eats worms, mussels and crustaceans by drilling through their shells."

"I Hope this was useful. I think snails are pretty sweet! Not that Theodore would agree. Sue however is enjoying the high speed ride."
